This is a pretty vintage paperweight by Dean Gill.
I have checked the Caithness Catalogue - and it does not appear in there and does not seem to have been officially issued by the company.
It is perhaps a trial piece. It has the initials on the base of Dean Gill (DG) who lived near the Caithness Glass site and was taken on as an apprentice. He was taught the skills of cutting and polishing glass by Martin Murray.
I think that this might be a unique piece made when Dean was first working at Caithness. It does not have the usual Caithness markings on the base - but only a small etching mark DG / CG / 1984.
The weight is ball-shaped and is clear in colour. There is a shallow base colour - which is a petrol blue shade with a slightly rough texture. The blue base has a few added clear air bubbles - and with undulating waves, I assume that this was supposed to resemble waves. On the sides are two acid-etched Scottish seabirds - one on each side of the weight (three-quarters of the way down). Both birds are in full flight and soaring over the waves below.
It is a large size and has a diameter of about 3 inches.
It is a very pretty weight that is in good vintage condition - with no chips, scratches, or damages. It would look great on display in a Highland cottage or seaside beach house.
It is probably a unique piece by Dean Gill - where he has been honing his skills in the creation of beautiful weights - and his engravings. It is a fine Scottish weight - and the fact that it is a one-off is taken into account with my pricing. It is probably for a collector of rare Caithness weights.
It was rather difficult to take images of this weight as it was very reflective - but I hope that I have taken enough to show you all its details.
