This is a pretty vintage 1970s paperweight by Caithness Glass.
It is marked on the base: Caithness Glass and the issue number 212 / 500. It comes from an edition of 500 weights - but the edition closed at 495. It had an original retail price over 45 years ago of £125. It is catalogued as CT-145.
It is a date cane on the base: 79 and the original label sticker as well.
It is another stunning Colin Terris weight. It seems that it was designed by Colin Terris and made by William Manson (when he worked at Caithness Glass).
It is a Christmas or winter theme. The base colour is a dark black shade. On top of the base ground is a single rim of white millefiori canes, that look a little like linked snowflakes. In the centre is a wreath of emerald green holy leaves with a few red berries on the tip. There is a little old gold coloured bow at the bottom of the wreath.
Around the side of the weight, there are five circular polished oval facets and on the top of the weight, there is a concave viewing facet. The cutting of the facets seems to create an optical illusion that there is more than one millefiori ring on the weight (as photographed)
The base is polished. It is not signed as being by Colin Terris or Manson. This is not an unusual occurrence, as many of his weights made at Caithness often devoid of the artist's signature.
It is a fabulous weight - and looks amazing on display. It is listed at a fair price. This takes into account the complicated design, its excellent condition with no damage of any kind.
