This is a one-off piece made by the Scottish artist and pottery, Robert Sinclair Thomson (1913 - 1983), or as he was known in his artistic career - Sinclair Thomson.
He was born in Glasgow in 1915. In 1941 he enrolled as a pupil at Glasgow School of Art, where he studied alongside Joan Eardley (1921-1963). He was also a great friend of William Giles and John Maxwell.
From 1960 until 1975 he served as a teacher at Glasgow School of Art, and spent his summers painting views across the Firth of Clyde from his cottage at Ballantrae.
After the end of WWII, Thomas and his wife Florence Jamieson (b. 1925) were the first artists to open a commercial studio pottery in Glasgow. Throughout the 1950s and 60s, they worked from their house in Clouston Street and made a variety of handmade items such as mugs, plates and bowls, small pieces of jewellery and wall plaques. They specialised in freehand slip techniques (as on this interesting dish) to apply decoration.
Thomson was a popular teacher in the Department of Drawing and Painting at the Glasgow School of Art from 1960 until ill-health prompted his retirement in 1975. He was elected an associate of RSA in 1952, and later a full member of RSA. He showed regularly at Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts.
This interesting piece of Scottish studio pottery - must have been a special piece commissioned for the Glasgow Art Club (GAC initials on the front in slipware), and as such is a rare survivor, and of course a unique piece.
The Glasgow Art Club is a private members' club which has for generations been a meeting place for artists and people interested in the Arts. It has occupied its existing Bath Street premises since 1893.
So an interesting historical pot. In good condition - with a strange "patched" section to one side (as created). The interior of the bowl is a lovely blue colour. With Thomson's studio stamp / seal impressed on the base, again as photographed. The bowl has a diameter of 5 1/2 inches and a height of 2 inches.
