Albany E. Howarth (1872 - 1936) was an English architectural and landscape etcher and watercolour artist. He was elected an Associated of the Royal Society of Engravers in 1920 and frequently exhibited at the Fine Art Society, the Royal Academy, in London.
This is a very realistic drypoint etching by Howarth, It is dated 1918.
The composition features a detailed view of the Ponte Vecchio (Old Bridge) in Florence.
The bridge spans the River Arno at its narrowest point, and it was the site of a bridge since Roman Times. The bridge shown in Howarth's etching is the later medieval stone double-arched one. It was noted for the shops that were built along the top of it - and these originally occupied butchers, tanner, and farmers. Today these units are occupied by jewelers, art dealers, and souvenir shops.
