This is a collectable little drawing by Barry Fantoni - who was born in London, 1940.

Examples of Fantoni's work is in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery in London.

Please also see my related cartoon in my Iconic Edinburgh Online Store by his friend Willie Ruston - the pair of them famously appear in a photograph by Lewis Morley which is the collection of the National Portrait Gallery - a fine photograph for Private Eye which spoofs modern fashions.

This is one of two works by Fantoni that I had in my Iconic Edinburgh online store (the other one sold in a day! - so now only one Fantoni is left in stock). Plus a similar pen and ink caricature by Willie Rushton dated 1991 and relates to the writer, Fay Weldon.

Fantoni studied at Camberwell School of Art (1954-8) and following his expulsion attended the Slade School of Fine Art. He joined the staff of the magazine "Private Eye" as a cartoonist and columnist. He also wrote scripts for the BBC's satirical show "That Was the Week That Was".

In 1966 he hosted the fashion and music programme, "A Whole Scene Going On"; for which he was voted Male Television Personality of the Year. The show featured performances from the likes of The Who, The Kinks, and The Pretty Things - so he was very much at the heart of the Swinging 60s in London.

Fantoni produced caricatures for the listings magazine Radio Times and the Listener in the mid-1960s. He has also achieved success as a poet, playwright, and jazz musician.

This is a harder-to-find little original sketch by him for a cartoon that was probably published in "The Listener" - but for this one, I have no date for its actual publication.

It is a pen and ink sketch - you can see on this drawing that little areas of the original drawing have been painted over with "stop out" white paint and changes to the composition have been made. The underdrawing can be seen on close inspection under the correction fluid (as photographed).

A selection of similar pocket cartoons or caricatures is currently on offer at Chris Beetles gallery for £350 - so my price here is a very fair one for this interesting illustrative artist.

This wee comical illustration sees an author taking a manuscript to his publisher. It lampoons the difficulties of filling in forms to allow the public lending of books etc. - the book being published is a guide to help you do this.

The drawing is signed along the upright right-hand edge.

It is a small drawing - measuring 13 x 5 x 8 cm. The frame is the original 1970s good quality chrome - it is 19.5 x 15 cm - with a depth of 2 cm.

UK Postage will be charged at £4.95 - and this will be applied to your order at the checkout.
