Frame Size is 49 x 60 cm\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt shows two strange people or creatures walking in a magical landscape - which is full of random abstract floating shapes - there are three printed coloured making up the image. It reminds me of the work of the Spanish artist Joan Miro - or possibly fellow Scottish artist, Alan Davie.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe print would look fabulous in a mid-century interior - it is sold in its original wooden frame and cream-coloured window mount - fresh enough to hang straight on your wall - I have photographed the moulding of the frame for your inspection.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt is probably a work of interest to collectors of contemporary Scottish art - and it is listed here at a very fair price for an original mid-century 1960s Scottish artwork. I would imagine that this is the only surviving impression of this vintage print - so also now probably a unique print. Wilson’s main influence was art from Northern Europe, in particular, the work of Durer and Breughel. Limited Edition of 50 Impressions","description":"\u003cp\u003eThis is a fine self-portrait by the celebrated artist, Edgar Holloway.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt is from a small limited edition of only 50 impressions issued and this one is No. 8 - so all the lines are nice and crisps - with little signs of wear to the plate.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt is signed in pencil and edition number by the artist.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHolloway must have thought quite a lot of this print - as you can see from the label on the back - that he submitted it himself to the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in 1985 for inclusion. Interestingly - the submission label on the reverse of the frame shows that he has sent it from Woodbarton at Ditchling Common - which was previously the home of his friend and mentor, Eric Gill. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis print was later sold through the Open Eye Gallery in Edinburgh.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis sensitive and penetrating self-portrait is made using etching and aquatint - impressions of it are now quite hard to source. Another impression is in the collection of the National Galleries of Scotland.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHISTORY: Holloway died in 2008 of 94 - and was the last survivor of the Etching Revival of the 1920s and 1930s. He was a legend in the history of British printmaking.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHe was born at Mexborough, near Doncaster, on May 6 1914,\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBy the age of 20, Holloway had gained the favour of some of the key figures of the \"etching boom\", among them Campbell Dodgson, then keeper of the department of prints and drawings at the British Museum, where his work was exhibited. His one-man exhibitions in London met with critical acclaim, and he also featured at the Victoria and Albert Museum and other major national institutions.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHe had gained the respect of established printmakers, including John Copley, Muirhead Bone and Joseph Webb, and became a close friend of the artist, William Wilson.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA retrospective was held at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford in 1991 and in the same year he was elected a member of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers. His work is in the collections at the British Museum, the Victorian and Albert Museum, in London, the National Museum of Wales, Harvard University and the New York Public Library.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAlthough Edgar Holloway made many highly accomplished topographical prints and fine portraits, he is best known today for the many penetrating and superbly handled self-portrait etchings through which he revealed his own intriguing persona (such as this one).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eGiven that such fine impressions of this print are now hard to source - my asking price for a work by this major British printmaker is certainly a fair one. Blyth joined the Royal Army Medical Corps in 1941 and served with them until the end of the Second World War. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn 1946 he began teaching at the Edinburgh School of Art and became an artist in residence at Hospitalfield House, Arbroath. He moved to Aberdeen in 1954 to take up a post at Gray's School of Art, where he became head of drawing in 1960, a post he maintained until his death in 1970. He was very influential on a whole generation of Scottish artists. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt is a most attractive and unusual image by him. It is one of Blyth's fine colour lithographs - and is signed by him, bottom left (as photographed). It dates to 1958.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe print is in good condition with no issues. The sheet is loose and has not been laid down. I have had it all recently framed in a good quality window mount and simple black frame. It shows a Christmas or Nativity scene - three exotic Eastern kings arrive at the stable where Joseph, Mary, and the Baby Jesus are staying. They carry tall flag poles with fluttering pennants and lay their gifts at the feet of the baby. A procession is shown through the window it is winding its way forward towards the stable.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI love the addition of the little birds perched in the stable rafters and watching the scene. Given the date of this print - 1914 - has Copley included these to represent doves of peace. They were issued in 1918 and only had 75 published.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eImage size: 9 x 12 cm. Frame size: 23 x 23 cm.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt has been all reframed for you - with a clean fresh mount - all ready for you just to hang on your wall.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWalcot has shown the entrance facade to the Cathedral and in front is Parliament Square. To the extreme left, you can see the tall tenement buildings on the Royal Mile.
