This is a lovely piece of folk art. It is a heavy porcelain figurine of two sweethearts embracing. It is entitled The Lovers.
The model was made at the Kyiv Pottery in Ukraine in the 1950s / 1960s.
The figures have a literary source and are said to represent the lovers Galya and Levko from Gogol's novel of 1831 "The May Night". The couple is depicted wearing the traditional costume of the Ukraine Region.
The Kyiv Experimental Art Ceramics Factory was founded in 1924. After WWII the company expanded to manufacture decorative items - such as this figurine. The pottery and stylized figures were very popular items both for the more local Soviet market and also for export to leading retailers around Europe.
The height is about 28.5 cm. Weight unpacked is 1.1 kg
A rather more common piece of Kyiv Pottery - and this is reflected in my lower asking price for this finely modelled piece.
It is in excellent condition with no damages.
