They wobble about from side to side, as if dancing!","description":"\u003cp\u003eThis is a sweet little pair of matching bisque pottery figures - which date to the mid 20th century - I would suspect the 1950s, perhaps even a little earlier in date.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese wee figures are marked to the base: FOREIGN, which was often marked on Japanese or German pieces of pottery after WWII.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese are little novelties - and take the form of a little Dutch Boy and Girl. I think that these ones are probably Japanese in origin.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThey are not traditional \"nodder\" as such - as their heads do not nod up and down - but the mechanism is the same and this wee couple instead sway from side to side. Not sure if the pin has been replaced later on - but there is the head of a little glass pin holding the movement mechanism in place as you can see in my photographs.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEach figure is made of bisque pottery - with has a Royal Blue over-painted glossy glaze on the clothes - and wee blush tinted face and hair.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn good condition with no damages. It dates to the late 19th century or early 20th century.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI am not really an expert on these plaques - so I am going to fully describe it for you.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt is certainly an antique piece - and not a modern copy or fake. There was a very old fragment of old newspaper which had the date on it - this is for 1934 - and it has been all sealed up in the back of the frame since it was probably re-framed in the 1930s.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSo this one certainly pre-dates the 1930s.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have looked for the KPM mark on the back - but sadly did not locate one.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis makes me think that it might indeed not be KPM. but perhaps another German company such as Hutschenreuther - as it does have an impressed three letter code, as noted below - which often appears on Hutschenreuther plaques.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt plaque also has several pencil \/ pen inscribed numbers.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAll of which I have photographed for your inspection, but more photographs can be supplied for detailed inspection.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis plaque has the impressed number 260, perhaps a serial number?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis hand-painted plaque measures 6 5\/8 inches x 4 7\/8 inches (17.5 x 12.5 cm) - so slightly larger than some other examples.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe back of the plaque is flat - and the front is slightly convex with a camber to the surface, as you might expect.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis plaque is taken from a famous painting 1635 by Rembrandt - and shows Rembrandt and his wife, Saskia \/ Scene of the Prodigal Son - and shows the happy couple enjoying the high life! It seems to have been a popular subject for these plaques.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe plaque is in excellent condition with no damages. I have removed from the old frame - which admittedly is pretty basic.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is being sold as a genuine hand-painted late 19th century \/ early 20th-century example and it is all hand painted. Both are in excellent condition with no damages or restorations.\u003c\/p\u003e \n\n\u003cp\u003eThese Schafer \u0026amp; Vater figures reflect the eventual acceptance of Darwin’s theory of evolution. In 1900 - it gains national acceptance and Darwin's intellectual pursuits are credited for “progressing the country.” His theories are even used in advertisements to promote furniture sales at this time.\u003c\/p\u003e \n\n\u003cp\u003eThis little pair is a very fine antique collectables and dates to around 1905 - 1915.\u003c\/p\u003e \n\n\u003cp\u003eThe figures two seated monkey's (the Theory lay claim to man being descended from apes and not created in god's image) - and they have been named on the base to the front of each figure: Adam and Eve.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eEve gives a seductive smile to Adam and holds out the apple representing the food of knowledge to Adam.\u003c\/p\u003e \n\n\u003cp\u003eEach figure nods and their heads are on thin wires - and Adam has a little storage pot to his side for keeping your matches in.  Adam's wire to allow his head to wobble or nod seems to be a bit overly long - but I have not risked snipping it shorter. Both figures nod easily.\u003c\/p\u003e \n\n\u003cp\u003eThey are on good vintage \/ antique condition - with no nasty chips or damages. The price reflects both the rarity and condition of these special S\u0026amp;V figurines.\u003c\/p\u003e \n\n\u003cp\u003eHISTORY: The company was founded by a Gustave Schaefer and Guenther Vater in Germany in 1890. By 1896 the business was so successful that they were able to expand to the List Porcelain Factory at Neuhaus.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe company aimed at producing high-quality items in hard-paste porcelain - and it made luxury items, including figurines and dolls' heads. They also produced a range of soft-paste porcelain items such as small liquor bottle which were distributed in pubs etc.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eSchafer \u0026amp; Vater were better known for their comical and figural items. They manufactured these in teapots, jugs, creamers, bottles, match strikers, and planters, with a backstamp impressed with a crown above an 'R' in a star. 'Made in Germany' was sometimes stamped in black. Occasionally, Schafer \u0026amp; Vater pieces appear without any stamps or reference to their origin, but they are easy to recognise due to their characteristics and unique craftsmanship and unusual design.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eTheir wonderful novelty figures were always very popular in the States - and by 1910 the American firm of Sears Roebuck \u0026amp; Co began to import and distribute Schafer \u0026amp; Vater pottery items.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eIn 1913 Paul Schafer had taken over from his father and, working alongside Gunther Vater, built up a successful workforce of around 200 people. They are all very rare and hard to source and are special items for the specialist collector of these cute little German bisque figures.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis little model shows a google-eyes Dutch boy and Girl sitting on a bench. They feature in other Schafer models of a similar nature - and are based on the Tuck postcard series \"Little Hollanders\" - by the artist G. Shepherd.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese little pair are antique collectables and date to around 1905 - 1915.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe couple is sat on a bench with the match holder in a tree stump to the left-hand side of the wee Dutch boy. Underneath are the letters: WAITING FOR THE SMACKS.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe really cute bit is when you turn them to the back - you can see that each figure has a little rough area on the seat of their pants - where you would strike the match on.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThey are on good vintage condition - with no chips or damages. Displays very well.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese antique pieces of German smoking paraphernalia are now hard to find.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHISTORY: The company was founded by a Gustave Schaefer and Guenther Vater in Germany in 1890. By 1896 the business was so successful that they were able to expand to the List Porcelain Factory at Neuhaus.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe company aimed at producing high-quality items in hard-paste porcelain - and it made luxury items, including figurines and dolls' heads. They also produced a range of soft-paste porcelain items such as small liquor bottle which were distributed in pubs etc.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSchafer \u0026amp; Vater were better known for their comical and figural items. They manufactured these in teapots, jugs, creamers, bottles, match strikers, and planters, with a backstamp impressed with a crown above an 'R' in a star. 'Made in Germany' was sometimes stamped in black. Occasionally, Schafer \u0026amp; Vater pieces appear without any stamps or reference to their origin, but they are easy to recognise due to their characteristics and unique craftsmanship and unusual design.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTheir wonderful novelty figures were always very popular in the States - and by 1910 the American firm of Sears Roebuck \u0026amp; Co began to import and distribute Schafer \u0026amp; Vater pottery items.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn 1913 Paul Schafer had taken over from his father and, working alongside Gunther Vater, built up a successful workforce of around 200 people. Fully signed to the rear","description":"\u003cp\u003eThis is a very strange piece of studio or art pottery.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt looks from the design and structure that it is Scandinavian in origin.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt takes the form of a shallow bowl - which is made from a heavy slab of pottery with a slight circular indentation in the centre.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe design in the centre shows two abstract fish - swimming in opposite directions.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe whole upper surface of the dish is covered in a pattern of little pastel coloured interlocking oval shapes - which to me looks like the texture of shagreen.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt measures: 7 1\/2 inches square (19 cm) and with a depth of 1 1\/2\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe dish is very thickly made and has a good weight to it - unpacked it is 920 grams.\u003cbr\u003eI am not familiar with the maker's mark on the back of the dish - but the mark's on the reverse certainly look Swedish or Danish in style to me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA very unusual plate - and I have been unable to find another like it.
