This is a lovely little vintage handbag or evening bag. It dates to about the 1940s.
It is a tapestry style bag with a chain handle and a fancy gold-tone clasp closure, as photographed. I love the clasp of this bag - it is very fancy and embellished with little orange glass cabouchons. The catch is made of fine gold-coloured metal in a fancy shape.
The main body of the bag is black and covered on both side with matching petit point decoration - the stitching is in miniature and in excellent clean condition. They stitching on the front and back are identical. There is decorative petit point expansion border around the bottom.
The interior of the bag is in warm honey-cream taffeta which is totally clean - with no signs of any use. It is as nice as the day that it was made. There are two little pocket sections on the inside - where you could perhaps store your bank card to use when out and about. It comes complete with two original mirrors. They are in a little shot-silk purse, as photographed.
The bag would certainly hold a mobile phone, your keys and perhaps a comb, little powder compact and lipstick. It is a sweet little bag for more formal events when a larger "day" bag might be too casual.
It is interesting that there is an old sheet of cloth - advertising a shoe-shine. This is mid-century in origin and advertises a shop in Ashford in Kent. Gosh! wondering how these bags managed to end up in Scotland over 70 years later.
It is certainly a beautiful example and looks like it has been stored away from the day that it was made and never used. Comes from a smoke-free house,
