The company was founded in Birmingham as a company of silversmiths in 1836,

In the 1830s they started experimenting with gilding techniques and creating patinas on metalwares. This led to their development of a new patent for electroplating different metals onto a variety of metal surfaces (as we can see on my inkwell). Their metalwares were never cheap and the company was given the Royal Warranty to design pieces for Queen Victoria and subsequent rulers.

This is a very fine piece of Victorian metalwork / electroplate. It has has a very busy Neoclassical decoration all over the outer rim which features intricate images of Gods and Goddesses. The central image on the lid features Aurora who is shown driving the four horses pulling the chariot of the dawn.

It dates to around the 1850s - and the base is marked Elkington and has the impressed pattern number 941

It is 19.5 cm in diameter and has a height of 4 cm.

CONDITION REPORT: It is in excellent condition with no damages. The design is in two tones - with the figures in relief picked out in a rich copper colour and other areas are silver plate. It has a hinged lid which is nice and secure - and amazingly it has its original fluted glass liner - which is a very attractive clear glass one. The main outer upper rim has all the details picked out with a burnished copper tone - the dipped ring band in the centre around the inkwell is a silver-tone and the lid is also predominately more silver. I don't think that the plate has been rubbed off on the decoration - but rather that Elkington are using different colours of metal to produce contrast to the design and a two-tone patina to the metal - there are no patchy singular areas (which would suggest wear) - and there are certainly no signs of confined areas of wear or rubbing to smaller specific areas. The back of the inkwell - has its original patina of age - as photographed.

My inkwell - is certainly in fantastic antique condition and will make a fine addition to your Victorian calligraphy collectables.

It will be sent to you with Royal Mail Tracked Postage (Medium Parcel). It might even be Continental in origin - as the model appears to be a little Austrian or perhaps Bavarian boy wearing a traditional hat with a big flouncy feather on the side - and little cord tassels details. Remarkably, the very delicate upright feather has survived over 100 years with no damages. There appears to be a little maker's mark on the base - but I am unable to decipher it.

The hat of the little boy is hinged at the back and tips back to reveal its original fitted metal inkwell - this can be removed. The inkwell is not solid metal but is hollow made of thick cast metal.

I have decided not to polish it - and it retains a slightly darkened patina to the metal - which is commensurate with age - the patina is not applied to a modern piece to simulate age - the antique finish is authentic to the pieces of this date.

I have taken lots of images for your inspection - and from these, you should be able to most easily assess the exceptional condition and the detailing of this most unusual inkwell.

I just love the crisp casting of the wee boy's curly hair, the folds of the little cravat tied around his neck - and of course - all the little flumes and quills on his big feather.

It is just stunning - probably an item for the more specialist collector. I am sure that they will be able to identify this well fellow quite readily and want to add him to their collection.

No damages.

Dimensions: The height to the top of his feather is 4 1/4 inches. Very Sculptural with an Egyptian Figure Seated Beside Two Ink Pots

This is another of my antique inkwells in my online store. This one is really unusual and I have never seen another one quite like it.

It must date to the early 20th century - or possibly the late 1920s or early 1930s - when the discovery of the tomb of Tutankamun instigated a mania for all things Egyptian.

This is made of heavy cast brass. The bass section is made separately as a single section - and the figure and inkwells have been applied later and screwed in. The base has a decorative border with applied Egyptian palmettes and lotus flowers all around - and on each long side (which would function as a pen holder space) there are ba-birds with out-spread wings.

In the center of the ink well - is an Egyptian lady. She is sitting with her hands clasped around her knees. She wears a long pleated robe - and you can see all the details of the folds when the inkwell is viewed from the side. She also has long braided hair - and her braids echo the details on her costume. There is a decorative panel on the front. This shows a regal scene with a figure seated on a throne - so I am assuming that the figure might represent Cleopatra or some other regal figure.

Look at her feet - the modeling is quite exquisite and you can even see her tiny toenails. This would never have been mass-produced and would have probably been an expensive desk accessory in its day when first produced. There are no maker's mark on this piece - which is quite surprising.

There are a total of three ink wells with glass liners. The largest is contained within the body of the figure - her upper torso tips back to reveal an aperture that contains a little glass container for the ink.

There are another two ink wells - with hinged lids - made to look like baskets or incense burners and placed at each side of the figure. Again, with glass inkwells - there are rim chips to two of the glass liners - but given the use and age of this item - this is quite acceptable. I have photographed them - indeed, I have taken oodles of images - to allow you to examine all the aspects of this interesting item.

The interior of the well sections has evidence of use and age. There are areas of verdigris to the metal inside commensurate with age and use. This is impossible to replicate in modern pieces.

Dimensions: The base is 20 x 14.5 cm. The height of the sculpture of the seated woman is 15 cm. It is a very heavy and substantial piece - and unpacked the weight is 1.8 kg.

It could have to be sent to you with Parcelforce24. They are hallmarked silver and have a nice gold-gilt wash inside to protect the silver from any corrosive action of the salt.

As you can see from my photographs - these are in lovely antique condition.

They come complete with their original salt spoons. These have a bowl in the shape of a miniature scallop shell and the finial has a swan motif (beautifully modelled) sitting amongst bullrushes. Again, each spoon is hallmarked and in excellent condition.

The set comes with its original fitted case - the exterior is a black leather (a few wee scuffs to the surface here and there). The shape is very Victorian in form and of a quirky geometric shape. The interior is a claret coloured velvet all ruched in the lid. The case is in generally good antique condition - and the interior is nice and clean.

The interesting thing about these silver swans is that they are here seen in the context that they were originally made - as salt dishes with little matching shell and swan spoons. In more recent times - these silver swans seem to have been converted into pin cushions and marketed as such - they look just fine as pin cushions - but they were originally designed for your dining table - and not your sewing box!

They have the maker's mark for Hilliard & Thomason (Birmingham).

The date letter is "n" for 1887.

The dimensions of each swan are: 7 cm in length, the width is 3.3 cm and the height is just over 5cm

Individual swans retailed as sewing accessories fetch sums in the high hundreds.

Here we need to take into account there are four matching ones, the original and exquisite spoons, and the original Victorian fitted case. I don't think that you will ever see another set like them.

Postage will be with UK Royal Mail. The parcel will be fully insured against loss or damage in transit.
