Original paper label","description":"\u003cp\u003eThis is one of a selection of vintage Scottish paperweights which I am listing in my shop - all with very fair prices attached to them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe one was made by Selkirk Glass in the Scottish Borders. It has an early Selkirk glass label on the base. It has an etched inscription as photographed - and is etched with the date 1980. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSelkirk Glass was set up by Peter Holmes and Ron Hutchison in 1977. Peter Holmes left in 2002. The company sadly closed in 2006 - so these beautiful weights are no longer being made.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis 1980 weight is an early one - made a couple of years after the company was founded.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt has a height of 2 1\/4 inches and a diameter of 2 3\/4 inches.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt is a very stunning paperweight with an inky Royal Blue ground or base - this is overlaid with another layer of harlequin glass made up of fused and swirls of melded millefiori slices and canes. From the centre issues an elongated bubble - and around the rim edge is are another rising elongated bubbles.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt must have taken great skill to have made this weight - and the quality suggests that it is an early Selkirk example by Peter Holmes. It is 2 3\/4 inches in height;  with a diameter of 3 1\/4 inches.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe weight is a slight strange one - and again we have Terris returning to outer space for inspiration.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe weight has a thin clear purple ground - this has little white sprinkles on the top of it - rather like snow - and on this is the decoration - three raised hoops or loops in different sizes and each is covered in snowy sprinkles - a little alien in feel. In the centre of the weight is a large clear air bubble. The dome of the weight has a pale lilac tinge through it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt is in good condition with no chips or scratches. It has the edition number on the base - and the original Caithness Glass Sticker.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is a fine Scottish weight - no longer made and looks great on display. The twisted latticino canes are pale purple and white in tone.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe central millefiori cane is a pale lilac tone - and it is surrounded by a rosette of lilac and sugar pink coloured canes. In between the latticino canes there are more millefiori canes - mainly very pale peppermint and pinks\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA bonnie weight and with a pretty use of such delicate light pastel colours (much more subtle in tone and much lighter and more muted than suggested in my photographs!).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt measures 1 1\/2 inches in height with a diameter of about 2 1\/4 inches. Closepack Millefiori with Butterfly Cane","description":"\u003cp\u003eThis is a lovely vintage paperweight dating to the 1980s.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt is a close pack paperweight - and signed in the centre with a Butterfly Cane.  This is a Caithness \/ Whitefriars paperweight. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhitefriars initially operated under the name of James Powell \u0026amp; Sons from 1834 - 1962, when it was renamed Whitefriars Glass. Sadly, in 1980 the company went out of business. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhen Whitefriars was liquidated, Caithness purchased the rights to the name and produced paperweights under the Whitefriars name for a short period.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis weight has concentric rings of millefiori canes - the canes are white and cobalt blue - and they are set into a translucent purple ground.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe cane in the center shows a silhouette of a butterfly. The flower is made up of pale peppermint green and white grainy petals - inside is a pink stamen section. The exterior has a satin or frosted textured finish to the glass - with a faceted oval polished viewing panel to the front. When you turn the weight around to the back there is a blue tinge to the glass - and gently and subtly engraved into the rear is a view of a Japanese garden with a semi-circular bridge and high trees - rather like Monet's Japanese garden. When you hold the weight up to the light - the image on the back fairly glows and it quite luminescent in feel.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTurn to the front and look into the polished oval facet - and you see floating on an oriental pond of mottle greens and blues - lots of pink waterlilies - it is all very beautiful - above the pond flowers and in the centre of the weight - hovers a little rainbow coloured dragonfly. All the details are just exquisite.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis was always a very expensive weight and on its issue 22 years ago - examples were sold in top retail establishments for £225.
