This is such a pretty Scottish Art Glass Paperweight. It was made fairly recently at the at the Borders Fine Art Glass Studio (now known as Holmes Glass). The studio has initially located at Hawick (where this one was made) and then later at Selkirk in the Scottish Borders.
It has the Borders Glass sticker on the base – and has an engraved signature for the maker, Andrew Holmes.
The company is run by the Peter Holmes and his son Andrew, and between them they have over 80 years of experience in glassmaking. Peter Holmes originally worked with Paul Ysart at Caithness Glass and ran Selkirk Glass for many years. Andew’s weights are not so easily found – especially such a lovely one – and he seems to concentrate more on producing vases and glass sculptures. I suspect he had some imput from his father in creating the lampwork canes used in this weight. It is priced to take into consideration its rarity and also its aesthetic appeal. This seems a fair price to me!
This is a fabulous weight by Andrew and shows a lot of influence from his father. It has an opaque glass base. There are four little lampwork flowers set around the edge in pretty colours of purple, periwinkle blue, sugar pink and lemon yellow. In between are little millefiori canes – and with another larger and more intricate one right in the centre.
It is in good condition and looks stunning on display.There is a really teeny weeny scratch on the side - which you can hardly see - but you just can feel if you rub your fingertip over the area. I have mentioned this minute blemish to be total accurate in my descrption - it is certainly too small to even photograph.
It measures 2 inches in height and with a diameter of 2 ¾ inches. Unpacked it is 400 grams in weight.
