This another interesting item that relates to oarlocks on Venetian gondolas. This is a more decorative example and it is made of heavy cast and highly polished brass. The creature depicted on the oarlock is a Hippocampus.
The creature comes from Greek mythology which combines a horse’s head and a serpentine or fish body, often with wings. Those on gondolas symbolize Venice's power and the city's connection to the sea.
This one dates to the late 19th century / early 20th century - and has been later mounted onto a good quality carved dark marble base, as photographed.
Dimensions: The height including the base is 12 3/4 inches. The brass model on its own is 9 3/4 inches in height. The widest point is 9 3/4 inches. The plinth is just under 6 3/4 inches by 3 3/4 inches - with a height 2 3/4 inches.
It is a very heavy piece and apart from being an attractive display item - it would have function perfectly as a doorstop. It is a stonking 5.3 kg in weight.
It is a lovely example with good modelling - the base plinth is of the most excellent quality - and serves to enhance the brass model and make it more sculptural in feel.
This large decorative example is priced at a fair price and looks great in an classical interior - or perhaps as a present for someone who likes things all Venetian. I have taken lots of images for your inspection.
