This is a most sought after etching and drypoint by the celebrated marine artist, William Lionel Wyllie.

Wyllie was born in London in 1851. He studied at the Royal Academy Schools (1866-69), where he won the Turner Medal in his final year. He worked as a marine illustrator for the Graphic between 1870 and 1890.

Wyllie was Marine Painter to the Royal Yacht Squadron and the Royal Victoria Yacht Club, and did much work, including posters, for the Orient Company, the White Star Line and the Union Castle Line.

Between 1924 and 1930 he worked on a fabulous panoramic oil painting depicting the Battle of Trafalgar for the Victory Museum, Portsmouth.

This is quite an unusual etching for Wyllie and shows a shoreside seen at the French village of Cancale in Brittany. The fishing fleet return from their trip out to sea and small pilot boats await to meet them and help unload the catch. People are already carrying the fish back to the shore in large creels.

The print dates to the Etching Revival of the 1920s.

It is pencil signed, lower left. To the right is the title Cancale.

It is NOT a reproduction but an original pencil signed drypoint and etching.

As you can see from my images - it is really a most fantastic impression with beautiful dark tones and rich velvety burr to the drypoint. The details are just exquisite and it is certainly an impression of museum quality.

It is in the finest of conditions with no issues.

Image size: 20 x 25 cm. Frame size is 39 x 43 cm.

Please note: The price quoted here is from the artwork only.

The frame comes free with this artwork. Any damage in transit to the frame / mount / picture glass will not be subject to any refunds, discounts or re-framing costs from us.

This etching is a rarer one and impressions do not come up for sale that often - this is reflected in my asking price.

The print has been hinged onto the backing board at the top - it has not been laid down or glued onto the backing sheet. The sheet is clean without any spotting or staining.

My price for this most sought after Wyllie etching is a very fair one, especially given its impeccable condition and the rich burr to the drypoint, suggesting an early impression from Wyllie's copperplate.

Please feel free to ask me any further questions, and more images can be provided on request for serious interest.

Postage quoted here is for UK Royal Mail Next Day Special Delivery so your print is insured in transit to you.
