On sale here Rarer Pair of Staffordshire Figures: Colonel Peard (1811 - 1880) & Garibaldi (1807-1882).

John Whitehead Peard was a British soldier, renowned as 'Garibaldi's Englishman'.

Both are shown seated on horseback. Titled 'Garibaldi - Col Peard' in raised gilt capitals (slightly rubbed), circa 1860. I love the fact that the faces and indeed the costumes of these two models look alike - they are almost twins... well this has an interesting historical precedent relating to the Unification of Italy.

Peard worshipped Garibaldi and followed him to Sicily with other English volunteers known as the Excursionists, to fight alongside the charismatic Italian leader.

Peard had an important role in 1860 during the Expedition of the Thousand, where he acted as Garibaldi's "double", and in doing so bewildered the enemy and instigated their retreat from Salerno and later from Naples.

Peard was awarded by King Victor Emmanuel II with the cross of the Order of Valour

Each figure is about 11 inches in height. They represent the two leaders instrumental in the unification of Italy.

Both in fine condition with no restorations.

There are some old firing and shrinkage cracks on one of the horse’s neck, front and back (as shown above). These are more cosmetic in nature and are stable.

The horses' legs and the reigns are very delicate - and are remarkably intact with no breaks on either figurine.

I would probably have to post these figurines to you separately to keep them safe in transit - this would put up postage costs to you a little.

Sadly - I would probably one be able to post in the UK.

The price quoted here is a fair one and is for the pair, as shown - it takes into consideration the comparative rarity of these models as well as the stress and firing issues on Peard's horse's neck. Examples of these figures are in the collection of the National Trust, England.

Like all my Staffordshire figures in my Iconic Edinburgh online store - these are sold as genuine 19th-century issues and are NOT modern reproductions.
