It is a vintage toy called Boomerang Tennis - it is made of tinplate and is shaped a little like a doughnut - with a gold-coloured indentaton in the top. The main body section is filled with weight so that it is heavy - and into the central dip - sits a little hard red plastic ball on a string. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI would imagine that you would originally have put this on table top and there with have been little bats - and you would hit the ball on the string back and forward. They are about 70 years old now. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThey are not dated but on stylistic grounds - they probably date from the early 1950s. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe word “Mascot” appears on the side of the tin, depicted on a flag that is carried by a little dog. Extremely Rare Survivor; c 1910","description":"\u003cp\u003eThis is a vintage box full of natural cowrie shell counters.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is no maker's name on the box (Chad Valley seems to have made a lot of these boxes of shells) - but it certainly is High Art Nouveau in design and date.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis box is a very, very rare survivor - and this is reflected in my asking price.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt is probably a museum piece - or for a specialist collector of old board games and toys. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe box is in fairly good condition - some spotting to the label on the top - but the colours remain bright and the surface scuff free - the blue sides to the box - have some scuffing here and there - and the box appears to be made from a pretty basic strawboard type material.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCowrie shells have the appearance of porcelain because of their pale colour and polished surface. In the past, they were highly prized and sought after for their decorative qualities.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn Africa, these shells were used as a form of currency for centuries as well as appearing on ceremonial dress and jewellery.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt seems that shells, pieces of bone and polished pebbles were often used as game pieces before the widespread use of plastics. These counters could have been used with a wide range of games such as Ludo, Snakes and Ladders, and Jacks.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI haven't been able to source another set with such an early date and attractive box.
