I was fortunate in being able to work on the project cataloguing them all when I worked there. John Berain designs are always exceptional. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThis is a very intricate and decorative ornament design by the architect and designer by Jean Berain (1640 - 1711) for a fanciful obelisk. These would have been used in decorative motifs that would often contain elaborate grotesque compositions with strange mythological figures and intricate arabesques and scrollwork. They are called \"grotesques\" and are example of whimsical Baroque designs that were popular in the French court of Louis XIV.  Berain's work was very influential and his designs were widely adopted for use on Boulle marquetry, tapestries, and faience ceramics. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan data-processed=\"true\" data-wiz-uids=\"IYF0g_g,IYF0g_h,IYF0g_i\" class=\"uJ19be notranslate\"\u003e\u003cspan data-processed=\"true\" data-wiz-attrbind=\"class=IYF0g_g_TKHnVd;\" data-animation-atomic=\"\" class=\"vKEkVd\"\u003eThis fine antique engraving has been printed on antique laid paper. It is a very lovely, crisp impression with dark lines and full of intricate detail. It has been printed from the original copperplate.
