Old London Bridge, Evening

This is a most unusual watercolour by the British artist, Arthur Henry Knighton-Hammond (1875 - 1970).

Knighton-Hammond was an English painter best known for landscapes, society portraits and industrial paintings. He used a variety of styles but is most famous as a watercolour painter.

This minimalistic work is obviously very much influenced by Whistler's images of the River Thames. The image has been pared down to almost coloured washes. The image is a mist-covered view of the old London Bridge. This bridge was later sold in 1968 to an American Entrepreneur and then shipped stone by stone to the States.

This study seems to be a pendant picture, created to be hung with my other Knighton-Hammond watercolour looking at the bridge from the other direction.

This study is painted in the lightest and most subtle washes which range from light grey to white tones. The image is very minimalistic and owes much in style to Whistler. It probably dates to around the mid-1920s when the artist was staying in London and exhibiting at the Fine Art Society in Bond Street. There is a similar pale image of the terrace of the House of Commons (illustrated as Plate 46) in Peter Norris's monograph on the artist.

It is signed in pencil lower right: Knighton Hammond and inscribed by the artist with the title lower left: London, evening 1925.

Sorry about any reflections that appear in my photographs as whiter coloured flashes. These are not on the watercolour but are simply reflections from the glass of the frame. Each watercolour is in good vintage condition; painted on a thick textured sheet of watercolour paper with no discolouration or foxing. Perhaps a darker grey mount on each image might bring out the subtler colours on the painting but they would look lovely hanging in a more contemporary interior in a Thameside apartment; hung on ice-white walls.

Knighton-Hammond was a member of leading watercolour societies in France and America and was the only English artist to have been elected to the American Watercolour Society New York apart from Sir William Russell Flint.

In Britain he showed at the Royal Academy, the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, the New English Art Club, the Royal Cambrian Academy, the Royal Society of British Artists, the Fine Art Society and the Royal Scottish Watercolour Society.

Knighton-Hammond was described by his friend, the celebrated artist Augustus John as the greatest English painter in watercolour of our time.

Dimensions: frame size is 41.5 x 50; Image size is 28 x 30 cm.

Postage would be with Parcelforce24 and this will be applied to your order at the checkout.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0271/1902/6240/files/arthur-henry-knighton-hammond-1875-1970-1925-watercolour-study-old-london-bridge-evening-british-art-727.webp?v=1790363166
https://www.iconicedinburgh.co.uk/products/1925-watercolour-arthur-henry-knighton-hammond-old-london-bridge-evening
