There is a space between the two rings where the light would also come out and be diffused by the outer black abstract shaped ring. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe black outer ring is held in place with metal studs - which also serve as subtle decorative features.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eA very easy shade as well to install - you just take out your light bulb and slip it through the removable section inside - and then tilt the fitting and it will hold onto the shade - and voila.. it is up! Easy Peasy! \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIn good condition - no nasty dents or scratches - there is one wee loss to the copper at the top - which you won't see when the shade is hanging - and that is about the only issue here. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eGreat Mid Century Modern Pendant Shade - nice and simple minimalistic design and it would look great in a room full of Scandi-modern furniture.
