Rare Frog Bowl by Clare Louise Henshaw, c 1994

I have owned this little "frog" bowl by Clare Henshaw (b. 1964) for many years. She is a British artist known for her work with glass and more recently painting and textiles.

It was it not signed by the artist - but it is most definitely a wonderful 1990s bowl by her, on stylistic basis dating to around 1994. Another similar bowl by her is illustrated on Miller's Glass Guide on page 54.

My little Graal bowl is certainly a masterful piece of modern glass design. The main body of the bowl is a mottled brown and grey-lilac to the base - with darker midnight blues to the rim section. From the inside Henshaw has sand blasted or engraved the forms of little ghostly frogs. There are a total of four little frogs - all squashed out and seen from above. I love their little claws. You need to hold the bowl up to the light to see all the little creatures depicted inside it. This is probably more of a special piece for a glass museum or modern design collection - as her work is much sought after and goes through prestigious auction houses.

My bowl is without damages and in pristine condition. It measures 3 1/4 inches in height (8.5 cm) and the rim is 4 3/4 inches in diameter (12 cm). The foot is an inch (2.5 cm).

SHORT BIOGRAPHY: Clare Henshaw developed an interest in glass design when she was attending a foundation course at Hereford Art College. At this time she lived in the Midlands, on the Welsh border. The area, particularly Stourbridge, had a long heritage glassmaking, and the history of the glass factories was part of a project undertaken by Clare whilst she was a student. She was always interested in the the rural landscape and countryside and this is reflected in my little frog bowl - featuring little frogs floating about in a pond.

Henshaw completed a residency at the Kosta Boda works in Sweden. It was here that she learned about the graal technique - engraving designs through coloured layers of glass. She also complete a year MA at the Royal College of Art, London in 1990.

Clare has won many awards including the Comité Colbért design award, and the Adrian Sassoon award. Her work has been exhibited internationally and purchased by a number of private and public collections including the V&A and the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge.

It will be sent to you with Royal Mail (Medium Parcel) Tracked.
