A Medieval Knight on Horseback. Modelled after Bergman

This is a rare Austrian cold-painted spelter model of a Teutonic knight mounted on horseback. He is shown dressed in armour on his fine steed.

It functions as a table striker or lighter. The form has been taken from the original bronze created around 1900 by Bergman. This piece followed this earlier bronze and issued in the 1920s.

The striker shows an interest in all things exotic and historical during the inter-war years in Europe.

The horse's saddle holds the wand for the striker and also would contain the lighter fluid.

The knight and horse are cast as one piece and stands on a striated black and white heavy marble base. The striking plate for the striker wand is at the rear of the horse's tail.

All the metal has been hand-painted with a matt silver paint (original to the piece). Highlights and details have been carefully picked out with an antique gold colour. This is all very subtle.

A harder to find example, especially in such lovely condition. Probably an item for the more specialist collector of lighters and tabletop strikers. It is very rare and this is reflected in my asking price.

My striker is in fabulous antique condition with no losses or damages. The detailing is all nice and crisp and there are no condition issues or scratches to the paint finish. Amazingly, even his lance is without damage...

The striker is 7 inches in height (including base but not the lance) and measures 6 inches wide. It has a depth of 3 inches. Weight unpacked is 1.7 kg

£220.
