SCOTLAND'S PRIDE

This is a fine antique Staffordshire figurine of a Scottish sailor stationed in the Crimea. It dates to the early 1850s and relates to the 19th century Crimean War.

The modelling of the figure is more three-dimensional but the back remains undecorated consistent with that on flatback figurines. These flatbacks would have been put on a mantlepiece or dresser and viewed from the front - decoration on the back would not be required.

Height: The figurine is 11 1/4 inches in height.

A fine figure of a Scottish soldier He is shown wearing his kilt, tassled sporran and military tunic. He wears a coloured plaid sash across his chest and has matching plaid socks. He wears a Scotch bonnet with two curled feathers on the front of his cap. He is shown standing with his leg resting on a cannon. He stands tall and proud with his hand on his hip and the other arm curled around a large flag. The model is titled with raised letters (painted yellow). The title is SCOTLAND'S PRIDE. This figure would have been originally paired with another showing a British sailor - and that would have been called England's Glory.

There are often variations in the colours used to decorate this model - I like these more subtle and understated ones. The painting to the soldier's face is detailed and delicately rendered.

The model is in good antique condition and displays well. There are no chips or cracks and the paintwork is without loss. You often find on this model that the head has had a repair or the top of the flag. This one is free from any such damage. It is a harder to find model - and I am listing it at a fair price to take all his into consideration.

The figure features in the following reference book: 'Staffordshire Portrait Figures' by P D Gordon Pugh, page 233.
