Edward Gage (1925 - 2000). 1950s Small Watercolour with Pen and Ink: The Hanson Cab II

This is another fine work in my Iconic Edinburgh online store by the celebrated Scottish artist, Edward Gage.

He was widely known in Scotland as an artist, and also worked as an art critic for "The Scotsman" newspaper. Gage also produced illustrations for a number of publications, including the "Radio Times".

He was born in Gullane, East Lothian in 1925 and studied at Edinburgh College of Art. Sadly, his artistic career was cut short for a time, when he joined the Scots Guards in 1941 and then in the Royal Scots Regiment. He served as a staff officer in India and Malaya from 1945 - 1947.

He returned to Edinburgh to complete his studies and in 1950 was awarded a travelling scholarship to Mallorca, Spain - where he befriended the poet, Robert Graves.

Gage had ten one-man exhibitions between 1964 and 1986, besides contributing paintings to group exhibitions in Edinburgh, London, and elsewhere.

He taught at Fettes College, Napier College, and at Edinburgh College of Art. From 1960 to 1964 he was President of the Scottish Society of Artists - and in 1992 he was made an MBE for services to Scottish Art.

He died in 2000, aged 74.

Examples of this work are in the National Galleries of Scotland (12 works) and the collection of the City of Edinburgh Council.

This is a sweet little original watercolour painting by him. The outlines are all drawn with pen and ink and the watercolour washes are applied loosely with a brush.

It is entitled The Hanson Cab II.

It is a smaller size work measuring 13 x 18 cm. The frame is a nice chunky oak wood one it measures 33.5 x 37.5

It shows a Christmas scene with a gentleman wearing a top hat has been out to collect a Christmas tree. He clutches onto it and sits in comfort in a horse-drawn cab on his way home. The hands of the carriage driver are seen holding the horse's reigns on the top of the cab and in front, the tail of the galloping horse is seen sweeping into the compositional from the left. In the background. You can see another Hanson cab on the opposite side of the road. The carriage zooms along - perhaps the occupant is racing to complete their Christmas shopping.

The little picture is full of Gage's style and dates to around the late 1950s or early 1960s. To me it looks a little like an illustration for a book. The use of colours are very mid-century in feel. Perhaps this is a little original design for one of Gage's annual Christmas cards.

As a small painted study - this sheet is unsigned. Full details on the attribution are on the old Open Eye Gallery label on the back - and showing that this had originally been part of an exhibition at this popular Edinburgh Scottish Art Gallery.

It is being sold with a deep wooden frame (as photographed) and is on offer for a very fair price - for this interesting Scottish artist.

There is currently a growing interest in Scottish artists of the Edinburgh School working in the 1940s - 70s, and Edward Gage is certainly an artist and name to conjure with. There is at present a much-renewed interest in his work in the salerooms and market.

UK Postage will be with Parcelforce24 / Royal Mail Tracked.
