Her art was inspired by both Chinese art \u0026amp; Oriental culture - although she never actually travelled to China, she used Chinese paintings, embroideries and wall hangings as sources for her images.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe highly individual style that Elyse Lord created reflects her Eastern source material - as well as the influence of Art Deco and early 1920s fashion on her work.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is a rare original watercolour (with pencil underdrawing) by Elyse Ashe Lord. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLord actively exhibited from 1915 through to 1939 in London with the Lefevre Gallery. Her art was also shown at the Royal Academy of Arts, the RI, the Royal Scottish Academy, the Walker Art Gallery of Liverpool, and the Fine Art Society, as well as at the Paris Salon, where she received a silver medal for colour prints.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHer work was also featured in Masters of the Colour Print, Volume 1, 1927, with an introduction by Malcolm C. Salaman.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLord’s watercolour drawings are certainly harder to source than her coloured woodcut prints. This is a very sensitive drawing showing a pretty Asian lady wearing a beautifully embroidered pink sari, and holding a tiny little white bird in her hand. She stands on the bank of a river - and you can see a little rowing boat behind her.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe care that Lord has taken in capturing the pattern on the shimmering material shows her interest in fashion and textiles. The lady is shown in isolation with a silhouette of Eastern temples in the distance. \u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eIt might be an original design or watercolour study for one of her etchings. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe drawing is in very good condition and probably dates from the 1920s or 1930s. It comes in a plain gold coloured frame\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt is signed in watercolour \"E. Lord\" just below the lady's feet.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eImage size: 36 x 30 cm.
