Rare 1930s Original Wedgwood Small Scale ALPHABET JUG.

These little orginal Wedgwood Alphabet Jugs are now hard to source and are very collectable.

The pattern (showing all the letters of the alphabet) was designed by the famous English artist and printmaker, Eric Ravilious (1903 - 1942). Ravilious was originally commissioned to produce a range of designs for Wedgwood in the 1930s.

This is a smaller sized jug. The design features images of recognisable items each one representing a letter of the alphabet. The jug was enlivened to the addition of bands of colour - the jugs often had yellow, blue, pink, olive or peppermint shades.

My jug was designed by Ravilious in 1937 / 1938 and has the subtle peppermint colouring. It dates to the 1930s / early 1940s. This coloured band has been applied by hand and the black designs are transfer printed. You can feel the ink of the transfer if you gently run your finger across the design.

The jug is 4 inches in height. From handle to spout it is 5 3/4 inches. The diameter of the rim is just over 3 inches.
