Meal (in green letters)

These semi-porcelain Utility canisters by Grimwades are highly collectable pieces of antique kitchenalia. They are called hooped canisters due to there distinctive raised hoops running around the body and the green letters on the side describing the contents. They date to the early 20th century.

The jars were designed for practical household use, storing common kitchen staples. A unique feature was the inclusion of advertising or branding printed on the underside of the lid. They were made in a variety of sizes ranging from 4 1/2 inches to the very largest one which is 10 1/2 inches.

This is one of the larger sized Grimwade's hooped household jars or storage canisters. It has a good bit of age to it and is in reasonable condition.

It is quite a showstopper when on display. It measures 9 inches in height and has a diameter of 7 ¼ inches.

This canister is fully marked on the base, as photographed and is in good antique condition. It has some rubbing to the rim and a fine star crack on the base. This is mainly confined to the glaze and it does not come through the pot itself. I have taken close up images of this. The center is near the word "jar" on the base and it is near invisible. The canister has lost its original lid (being a functional item these were often broken or easily damaged). It now has an old cork replacement. All the same it is a rarer larger size, in good condition for display - and is probably about 125 years old. This is all reflected in my asking price. This is a fair price for this harder to find example.

Due to its larger size and weight, the postage will have to be with Royal Mail Medium Tracked Parcel (Heavier weight). This will be applied to your order at the checkout.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0271/1902/6240/files/1900s-grimwades-large-edwardian-white-hooped-storage-canister-meal-in-green-letters-british-ceramics-383.webp?v=1794049565
