The couple are showing sitting on a bank in the country, with the trunk of a tree rising behind them to form the stem section of the spill vase. They are exchaning words of love and Burns holds Mary's hand in a moment of tenderness. The details of the costumes are picked out in gold - and little dots of peppermint green bocage are on the bank and the tree. The figure is not like a more traditional flatback - but is more modelled in the round - it is very three dimensional in form and would probably have sat on top of drawers or a table rather than a mantlepiece.

The figure is well-modelled with hardly any colouring applied. There is a little lozenge to the front of the figurine - with the words of his poem "Highland Mary" of 1792. They can just be made out in faint gold lettering:

how sweetly bloomd the grey green bird
how rich the hawthornes blossom
as underneathe their fragrant shade
i clasped her to my bosom

the golden hours on angels wings
flew o'er me and my dearie
for dear to me as light and life
was my sweet highland mary.

Condition: It is in good antique condition better condition - and is free from any damage or craquelure on the glaze.
