Y

It is a genuine 19th Century example and in antique damage-free condition. It is a rare model and you will not find many versions of this listed.

This one is a rarer subject and it is certainly a fine large one coming in at 9 1/2 inches in height (to the top of the head of the man). The width at the widest point is 8 3/4 inches. It has a depth of 3 inches.

The figurine shows a rustic group. To the left we have a Scottish gamekeeper. He sits hight on a grassy knoll and is playing a bagpipe. The wears a white bonnet with a pink feather to the front. He has a glossy blue jacket with a plaid sash over the top. He has a kilk and his attire is finished off with plaid socks and little black pumps. I always laugh at how Staffordshire potters model bagpipes - here they look like the Highlander is wrestlly a yellow spotted octpus... lol!

To the right, there is a Buckskin coloured horse. He looks out of the composition towards you and tilts his head slightly. Slung over the back of the horse is a deer. This is perhaps not such a great subject for modern tastes - but Highland gamekeepers and estates were very much popular with Victorian markets. Today - this piece might look best in a Highland or more rural interior or lodge house.

There are areas of textured bocage on the green knoll area - and this adds texture like you might find in moss or bracken to the model.

All the sames - it is a fine and rare model - and looks good on display. There are no damages to the model and all the legs are without issue. There is a little splash of blue to the bottom edge. This has been done in the creation of the figurine when the painter has got a little happy with the application of the blue on the jacket and has smudged a little here. There is also a little age related crazing to the glaze - consistent to a figure of this period. The previous owner has applied an oval of green felt to the base to prevent the model scratching your furniture. This can easily be removed.

The modelling on his figurine is certainly very crisp and detailed - and it is probably an early model taken from the mould before use has taken away the crispness of all the features that you might find in later pieces. The applied colours are all lovely and bright.

It will be sent to you with Royal Mail Tracked (Medium Parcel) - this will be applied to the order at checkout.

https://www.iconicedinburgh.co.uk/products/massive-19th-century-staffordshire-figurine-spill-vase-of-a-gamekeeper-and-his-golden-retriever-dog-copy-1
