The Bay of Naples and Vesuvius Erupting

These are a beautiful antique pair of matching watercolour and gouache paintings that date to the 1857 eruption of Mount Vesuvius.

These are a particularly fine pair which are painted with exceptional attention to detail and have a great atmosphere. They are both unsigned but have certainly been painted by a more highly skilled local Neapolitan artist.

These types of small paintings would have been made for the consumption of European tourists undertaking a "Grand Tour" in the 19th Century. They were typically sold as matching pairs showing a view of Naples during the day and a more dramatic scene of the volcano erupting at night.

Neapolitan gouaches delighted visitors who were eager to retrun home with memories of their trip. They are often of this smaller format so they could be easily sent home. They are usually unsigned and anonymous. They often have a black border around the images (as seen on mine) and below in white script the artist notes the time and the date of the eruption.

The production of Neapolitan gouaches lasted for more than a century until they were surpassed by engraved views of after the 1840s by photographic images.

The last eruption of Vesuvius took place in 1944.

These works on offer here are so much better painted than some cheaper more pedestrian studies. The attention to detail is exceptional and the atmosphere of the scene in both works is quite stunning.

These works are still on their original grey backing sheets - with are inscribed and dated 1857 below. They have recently been beautifully framed with appropriate new grey window mounts and frames. These set off the original 19th-century grey mount on each artwork. They are in excellent condition and ready to hang on your wall.

The condition of each little gouache is exceptional. They have never been framed before and always kept in a little folder. There is no fading or damages to them. A nicer pair would be hard to find. They are smaller examples that are perfect for modern interior settings. All this is reflected in my asking price. I have these priced at a very fair price given their quality at £395 for each wee painting.

Dimensions: Each frame is 32.5 x 37.5 cm. The images are 15.5 x 23 cm

Postage will be with Royal Mail Tracked, Medium parcel.
