The town has a long history of art glass manufacturing starting over 50 years ago in 1964 with Strathearn Glass, followed by Perthshire paperweights in 1968, J Glass in 1978 and finally Deacons Glass in 1980. John started as an apprentice with Strathearn Glass in 1967 but within a year was asked by the manager Stuart Drysdale to join his Perthshire Paperweights start-up team. It was here that John gained a thorough grounding in all aspects of running a glass studio.

After 10 years at Perthshire Paperweights, wished for more freedom to experiment with some of his own ideas. He left to set up his own studio - which he called J Glass (Jay Glass). The name came from "J" canes found in antique Bohemian paperweights that were a source of inspiration for John.

Allan Scott, the lampworker, joined John shortly afterwards and together they explored what could be achieved with paperweights. J Glass was highly successful and expanded rapidly until the economic crash in 1980 which forced its closure. Please also see my J (Jay) Glass weight by Scott - also for sale in my store.

J Cane paperweights are much sought after by specialist collectors - and this is reflected in my asking price for this lovely and highly skilled weight. The J Studio was not in operation for long and as such not so many weights now survive. It is also not so common to find them in their original boxes.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0271/1902/6240/files/rare-1970s-scottish-paperweight-j-glass-jay-weight-by-john-deacons-in-original-box-346.webp?v=1781576381
https://www.iconicedinburgh.co.uk/products/rare-1970s-scottish-paperweight-j-glass-jay-glass-weight-john-deacons-boxed
