Large Still-Life Watercolour Painting

This is a highly collectable original pencil signed watercolour by the Scottish artist, Ian Fleming (1906 - 1994).

It is quite a rare image by this artist in that it is a still life with the Scottish landscape seen through the window of his house in the distance.

Fleming was born in Glasgow and studied drawing, painting and printmaking at the Glasgow School of Art. He won an art scholarship and used it to travel to London, Paris and Spain.

Fleming started to teach at the Glasgow School of Art in the 1930s. He formed a friendship with the celebrated Scottish printmaker William Wilson. He is probably best known for his fine etchings and lithographs, but he also produced fine watercolours and oils featuring the Scottish landscape.

He served as Principal of Gray's School of Art between 1954 and 1971. He died in Aberdeen in 1994.

There is currently a renewed interest in his work and prices are continuing to rise.

This is a much more unusual work by him. It combines still life with a depiction of the landscape seen outside of Fleming's studio window. I have taken lots of images for your inspection. The watercolour is framed and glazed so any white marks in my photographs are flashes from reflections on the glass.

On the window ledge, there is a large black coffee pot and a white vase with large yellow and white flowers in it. The flowers remind me a little of similar works painted by Odilon Redon. The colours are picked up in the landscape beyond. A tractor is shown in the yellow fields and the landscape is bathed in a bright white light which issues from a sunbeam from the milky sun hidden in the clouds.

The palette is a restricted one of pale ochres, greys and whites. The watercolour is signed in pencil: Ian Fleming, on the lower edge of the picture, as photographed.

Image size is 47 x 65 m; The frame is 73 x 90 cm

It is framed in its original honey-coloured wood frame which has been washed with white.

Given the size of the work, it would probably have to be for pick-up only or for delivery in central Scotland. Please feel free to discuss other delivery options with me.

This is a very fair price for such a fine Scottish watercolour by this popular and much-sought after listed Scottish artist.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0271/1902/6240/files/scottish-art-ian-fleming-1906-1994-large-still-life-watercolour-painting-british-891.webp?v=1790403429
https://www.iconicedinburgh.co.uk/products/scottish-art-large-still-life-watercolour-ian-fleming-pencil-signed-framed
