Gouache & Wax Drawing by Sylvia von Hartmann Entitled "In Every End Lies a New Beginning"

Sylvia von Hartmann was born in 1942 and brought up in Hamburg. She studied at Edinburgh College of Art from 1963-66.

Initially, she taught at Coventry College of Art but has spent most of her time in Scotland since then.

She has been elected RSW, SSA and SSWA; and her work is in numerous collections including the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art.

This is a fine and much sought after drawing by von Hartmann. It is beautifully presented with a new mount and thick gold-coloured frame. It has originally been sold by the Open Eye Gallery and the old label has been attached to the back of our new frame.

The drawing has not been signed by von Hartmann - but she regularly did not sign her drawings. It is instrantly identifiable by her unique style.

The drawing has been made using gouache and pigmented wax resists - she did certainly love using waxes on her drawings. She imported special waxes from Germany which allowed her to use them in work.

The drawing is an attractive combination of imagery and text. This one has its title woven into the composition: "In Every End Lies a New Beginning. The work shows the artist's love of gardening and botany. There is a trellis shape which is laid out with lots of closed-up heads of dandelions. To the right hand side of the drawing we can see a little figure of a woman in a garden. She is drawn with a thin line directly into the waxy ground. The little figure is planting a new flower or bush - which will replace ultimately replace the shrivelling dandelions. The shady area with the lady in it - seems to look a little like a person seen in profile looking out to the trellis and sun soaked garden space beyond. This is all very typical of her style and themes in her graphic works.

It is a large drawing and will look fantastic on display.

Dimensions: Frame is 56 x 45 cm. The image size is 36.5 x 25 cm.

I have taken lots of images for your inspection. Sylvia von Hartmann's works are currently highly sought-after.
