Pencil Signed & Framed

Philip Reeves was an English artist, collage-ma ker and printmaker who lived for much of his life in Scotland.

Reeves studied at the Cheltenham School of Art (1947 - 1949) and at the Royal College of Art, London (1951-1954). Reeves became a lecturer at Glasgow School of Art in 1954 and was Head of Printmaking from 1970 to 1991. He founded the Edinburgh Printmakers Workshop in 1961 and was a founder member of Glasgow Print Studio in 1972.

Reeves was instrumental in developing the printmaking department at Glasgow School of Art. As printmaking took on a more central role within contemporary art during the 1960s and 1970s, Reeves developed his own work and experimented with print techniques as well as moving into collage. Inspiration for his work came from rural or coastal areas - the West Highland Way or cliffs in the North of Scotland, as much as urban scenes and cityscapes.

This is a rare print by Reeves - and shows an abstract representation of rocks at Ireland's eye. I cannot find another impression of this work - so it is a hard print to source. Ireland's Eye is a small uninhabited island off the coast of County Dublin. It is a special conservation area and special protection area. The island was formed during the Cambrian period and is of geological interest as well as being a haven for seabirds.

My lovely colour etching has been inscribed the title in the lower left margin and signed by Reeves in pencil, lower right. The image is an abstract one - which is printed with a variety of blue shades and with an emphasis on the island's rock formations.

This is a rarer early colour etching and aquatint by Reeves. It is not dated but on stylistic grounds, it must date to the late 1970s or 1980s.

Image size is 43 cm x 44.5 cm; Frame size: 65.5 x 74.5 cm

It has been presented with a new mount and is all framed up in a nice silver-toned wooden frame. Nice and clean and ready to just hang on your wall.

UK Postage will be with Parcelforce24. This will include insurance in transit - and will be about £24.95.
