Brittany Pattern","description":"\u003cp\u003eThis is a particularly attractive jug which was made by Buchan Pottery, who were based at Portobello, near Edinburgh (now closed).  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt dates on stylistic grounds to the late 1950s. The delightful Brittany pattern is a traditionally popular pattern in the Buchan Stoneware range. The variant of the pattern painted on this tall handled jug is a particularly attractive example. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe pattern on the jug has two large fruits; a pair and apple as the focal point of the design. These fruits are painted with vibrant colours orange, yellow, red and blue hues. Thet are surrounded a quickly painted double blue oval shape as a frame. The same image appears on the opposite side. In between each oval panet with three dividing patterns. These consist of vertical blue lines crossed by double dashes. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe word sample is printed on the inside rim, as photographed. It is rarer to find Buchan Portobello pieces marked with the word \"sample\". The pottery would have kept a design sample for reference purposes to show potters and decorators what the final item should look like. These sample pieces could also be shown to prospective clients to show them a sample of what the items in their orders might look like before being made up.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe jug is in perfect condition with no damages. The height is 5 1\/4 inches in height. From handle to spout is 4 1\/2 inches.
