It is an antique piece of Scottish Pottery and was made by Port Dundas Pottery in Glasgow.  It is does not have the Port Dundas mark - but it is near identical to my 3lb version also available on my website. This one dates to the late 19th century.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt has a lovely rustic design on the front showing a a group of little people dancing around a Maypole. This is the trademark of the Maypole Dairy. The \u003cspan\u003eDairy had numerous branches throughout the UK and was started by the Watson Brothers on Queen Street, Wolverhampton, in the year 1887.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis pot would have stored butter in an old-fashioned grocers or in a dairy \/ farmhouse. It has no inner rim  and was never intended to have a lid - so this is absent. The butter would have been covered in the shop with a sheet of waxed paper. It has a large applied carrying handle.  It would have held about 4 lbs of butter, as annotated under the handle. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe main body of the crock is in excellent damage free condition. There is an old stain to the bottom of the pot on the interior, as photographed. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt is certainly a lovely and collectable piece of Scottish rustic pottery and it would now look so good in a country cottage, barn conversion or farm shop. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe height of the crock is 6 inches - the diameter at the widest point is 6 3\/4 inches at the rim. The base is 4 1\/2 inches. The distance of the handle to rim is 8 1\/2 inches. It weighs 1.3 lg unpacked. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMy asking price is a fair one given its excellent antique condition and being a most collectable piece of antique Scottish saltglaze stoneware.  These as antique antique advertising items are much sought after.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 0.875rem;\"\u003eThis large crock will have to be sent to you with Royal Mail Tracked (Medium Parcel) Delivery.
