The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on Horseback

These must be the most adorable of Staffordshire figurines.

This is a pair which depicts the Duke of Duchess of Cambridge out for a ride on horseback.

We have, the Duke facing right, he is bare-headed and in military uniform. He holds his purple plumed cocked hat in his hand which rests on the horse's mane. The Duke is paired with the Duchess / or Louisa Fairbrother (Mrs Fitz-George) (1816 - 1890). She married George, second Duke of Cambridge in 1840.

George Willaim Frederick Charles, second Duke of Cambridge (1819 - 1904), was a field-marshal and commander-in-chief of the army. He was the son of Adolphus, Duke of Cambridge, the seventh son of George III. He commanded a division in the Crimea and was present at the Alma. At Inkerman, he was "grazed by a bullet" and fell ill and his devoted wife rushed out to nurse him. He was promoted to field-marshal in 1862 and was commander-in-chief of the army from 1856 to 1895. He was humorously known as "The Umbrella Duke" on account of taking an umbrella on parade instead of a sword when the weather was bad.

This fine pair date to around 1854.

Each figure is titled on the base to the front in gold gilt letters.

They were produced in plain white and gilt - as well as this lovely coloured version. They are fabulous items to pop on each end of a fireplace in a Victorian sitting room. As you can see in my photographs, they are certainly beautifully modelled.

The horses' legs are very fine - sadly, one has a hairline crack to the ankle, as photographed. There is a little craquelure of the base of one figure - but generally a lovely pair with hardly any condition issues - priced to take the hairline to the little horse leg into consideration.

These are genuine antique examples and not reproductions.

As a pair - these examples are quite rare ones.

The Prince of Wales is 8 1/4 inches in height and has a width of about 6 inches. The Princess is also 8 1/2 inches in height - and has a width of 6 1/2 inches.

Unpacked the pair is 2 kg in weight. They will be sent to you with Parcelforce24. This will be a fully insured, tracked and signed for service.
