Courtney - and the text here is by F.H. de La Motte Fouque. All the illustrations are by Arthur Rackham.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis rare book is the first edition, published in London, and is of a small edition of only 1,000 signed and numbered copies. It was published by William Heinemann, London in 1909.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt is in nice condition with a hardback ivory vellum cover with gold illustration on the front (the gilding on the front cover is slightly rubbed). Sadly, the vellum has discoloured over the years - this is common on these vellum-covered issues.  I am sure that this could be sorted out by a book conservator. It has also lost its closure silk ribbon ties - again these are easy to replace. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis volume contains 15 tipped-in colour illustrations (mounted on brown paper) complete with tissue guards with legends, and also has numerous vignette text illustrations. It has 136 pages.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is copy No. 333 of 1000. It was signed by Rackham in pen.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eUndines or Ondines often appear in European folklore as fairy-like creatures or water spirits. They are said to be able to only gain a soul by marrying a man and bearing his child. This aspect has made them a popular motif in romantic and tragic literature.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis issue is generally a fine clean copy. It is probably for a more specialist collector, It is a lovely book offered at a very fair price. The marking to the vellum cover has been taken into consideration with the pricing.
