In the Form of a Spaniel's Head","description":"\u003cp\u003eThis is an interesting antique coin bank or money box - it dates to the middle \/ end of the 19th century. \u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe bank is made of ceramic \/ earthenware - and was made in one of the Staffordshire potteries. \u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eIt takes the form of a little fireside spaniel or \"Wally Dug\". Originally - you would have had two full-size spaniel dogs on each side of your mantlepiece - and these were very popular with the Victorians. This is a quirky play on these models.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThese lovely little Victorian money boxes were crudely made, cheaply mass-produced items and most have irregularities, knocks and smudges in the clay and glaze because of the speed of manufacture and so examples vary in quality quite considerably. This one seems to be of better quality - with finer modelling to his features and more definition to his fur. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe little spaniel dog banks are much more difficult to find. \u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThis wee fellow displays well - and is in a fairly good condition commensurate with age and use. Some very minor fritting to the coin slot, as photographed. \u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe slot to put the money in is on the back of his head.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eHe is made of white clay that has been covered in a rich shiny treacle Rockingham glaze (you are looking at an original antique example and not a modern reproduction!). \u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eNo damages or nasty chips etc. He remains a harder to find item and looks good on display.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eDimensions: about 4 1\/2 inches wide.
