This is a very interesting and unusual 1970s table lamp.
The design is very much of the Brutalist style - and it is a nice large size - so will certainly make a good focal point in a modernist / shabby chic interior.
Stylistically, it looks like it was made by John Beusmans at Carn Pottery in Cornwall. The pottery was founded by John Beusmans in 1971 at the Old Chapel, Nancledra near Penzance.
This is probably a unique "one-off" piece. It is apparently not signed by Beusman or from what I can see marked Carns - there was originally an old cloth base on the lamp to stop scratching to your furniture surfaces - but this was removed by my husband when he re-wired the lamp. There are remnants on the base still - so perhaps these were concealing any marks (as photographed).
The colour and texture of the pottery used in the making of the lamp are certainly reminiscent of that on other Carn pieces. It has a very space-age feel to it - it reminds me a little of a large exotic post-apocalyptic fruit pod opened at one side to reveal the seeds inside - a Triffid perhaps?
Anyway, the design and details of the lamp are most consistent with those that you find on other Beusmans' hand-made pieces. The use of the grey and blue mottled glazes is most unusual - but perhaps this was an experimental or exhibition piece - there certainly has been a lot of work gone into the making of it and the abstract shapes, patterns with matt glazes and textures, and the carefully applied eggshell glazes would have required great skill to achieve.
Dimensions: Height 15 inches (main body section). To the top of the bulb 20 1/2 inches. The widest point is about 7 inches.
As you can see from my images - a very strange 70s Brutalist British Studio Pottery table lamp - one thing is for sure... you won't see another like it!
Fair price for the fine ceramic artwork. This lamp comes from my own collection - and it is completely fresh to the marketplace. I have been doing a little lockdown organisation of my loft space (as you do!) and have been listing some things been up in there since I moved in way back in 2000.
