This is one of three old carved South African long-handled pipes that I have in my online store. I have added a couple of images to my listing with all three in my store together so that you can compare them easily. But this listing is for the one only.
This one is Code A.
These hardwood smoking pipes are known as 'ingawa'. They have tin-lined bowls and come from the Eastern Cape, South Africa.
These pipes were smoked by both the men and women of the Xhosa tribe - usually the older generation - and were considered a status symbol. The pipes smoked by the women were longer than those smoked by the men and were sometimes decorated with beads.
These are now very collectable.
This one has short-length blue, red, and white inlaid hoops around the stem of the pipe near to the mouthpiece. The bowl is lined with a silver-coloured metal. This one is different from my other ones in that the mouthpiece section is not made of carved wood but rather a carved and shaped grey horn. The horn is a two-tone colour darker at the end near to the stem - and lighter to the slightly flared section at the top of the mouthpiece. It has not been chewed and remains nice and clean.
It measures 12 3/4 inches in overall length. The height of the bowl is 4 inches. The diameter of the bowl is just under an inch. The horn mouthpiece is about 3 3/4 inches in length.
