This is a very collectable piece of British Art Pottery.
It is a beautiful shape and a nice large size. It has twin handles which come from the main body of the bowl.
My beautiful bowl was made by Upchurch - and has an incised Upchurch signature on the base, which you can just see under the glaze that has pooled on the base.
The pottery was established in 1909 in Kent by the Wakely brothers. The most significant name associated with Upchurch Pottery is Edward Barker who established himself within the company before officially purchasing it in 1953.
Edward passed away in 1955 but his older son William carried on the business until 1963 when sadly Upchurch Pottery ceased.
This shallow bowl is a lovely example with no damage.
It is a most attractive colour with a subtle drab olive glaze and grey mottled glaze near to the rim.
I have taken a lot of images for your inspection turning the bowl around for these so you can see all the subtle variations all around on the thick glaze.
It has a nice thick, Ruskin-type glaze that has been applied by hand in the pottery studio. You can also see ridges in the clay where it has been hand-turned on a wheel. The glaze becomes very gloopy as you get to the base - and it is so thick that there are little bubbles in it - rather like you might find in "fat lava" pots made in West Germany in the 1970s.
A very simple and stylish piece of Upchurch and a fine stylish shape - and it is certainly a large one.
Unpacked the weight is just over 1.9 kg
It has a height of 4 1/2 inches and the diameter of the body at the widest is 8 1/4 inches. The diameter of the rim is 6 1/4 inches. From handle to handle it is 9 1/4 inches.
