This is a vintage 1950s Scottish stoneware jug, and this one is probably more of an item for specialist Buchan Pottery collectors.
My lovely jug was made by Buchan Pottery, which was based at Portobello, near Edinburgh (now closed).
It is a lovely traditional Buchan shape - but the pattern seems to be an experimental one - and one that probably did not go into widespread production. It features a design that the Buchan painter was playing about with - and we know that this was not a finished piece to be sold - but was a trail piece and has the word SAMPLE written inside the jug lid. These would have been kept at the factory for future design reference.
The pattern is Buchan's attempt to stay up-to-date - and they are looking at more abstract designs that were popular after the Festival of Britain exhibition in 1951. The painter was randomly applying different colours and lines to the sample to see how they might look on a finished jug.
The cute taller jug or pitcher measures 5 1/2 inches in height and with a diameter at the widest point is roughly 3 1/2 inches. The handle to spout is 4 1/2 inches.
It is in perfect condition with no damage.
