I love this vintage and very eye-catching stained glass hanging hall lantern shade or lantern for a porch.
It is made of a variety of angled geometric shapes of thick coloured glass that are held together with thick ribs of soldered lead. There are domed bullseye bright amber-coloured glass roundels all around, as photographed.
The shade is certainly a most unusual shape - ball-shaped with a conical cap at the top and hexagonal at the base. It is made of thick coloured glass and it has been all hand-crafted and unique.
It probably dates to the mid-20th century. It certainly is not a new item and has a bit of age to it - a very fine decorator's piece.
The hanging fitment on the top is very substantial - and the size of the hanging ring is part of the design.
The lantern comes complete with an old chain - each link is certainly of a most unusual shape, again as photographed. It also comes with a metal ceiling rose which has a hook for you to hang your chain onto. Your electric cable would have a bulb holder on the end and the cable would go through the hole in the brass holder on the top and you could snake it through the links in the chain to hold it secure - and then wire it into your ceiling power supply.
It would probably look best hung high up in a hall or entrance vestibule - or giving a welcoming light to a dark porch area.
Dimensions: the height of the glass stained glass section of the lantern is 11 3/4 inches and the diameter is 10 1/2 inches. The chain and holder are 15 inches in length.
It is a very substantial thick stained glass hall lantern - and it weighs 3.3 kg unpacked.
The lantern is in excellent vintage condition - as you can see in my photographs. Sadly - one of the bullseye roundels on the side has a very fine hairline crack to the glass - it is stable and does not endanger the stability of the glass - it would not be seen when hung up - and again, I have photographed this for my listing here - please carefully inspect these images.
There is a lot of soldered leadwork and a total of 8 amber bullseye glass roundels. Each of these measures 2 1/2 inches in diameter. The glass colours are amber, clear and a dark wine red colour.
I have taken lots of images of the lantern in close-up and also a couple with it all it up so that you get an idea of what it might look like in situ.
There is a little screw at the bottom section of the lantern - which you take out and there is a hinge opposite - that allows the base area to fold back and be opened up. So all you have to do is put your hand inside the glass shade to insert a new bulb when required.
My lantern or hanging shade is certainly an eye-catching and one-off unique piece and is sold lovely and clean.
