This is a lovely vintage 1950s decorative mantel clock. It is sold as working and keeping good time.
It was manufactured by the celebrated clockmaker Eliotts, as inscribed on the bottom of the face. It is a quality timepiece and was made to be retailed at the prestigious jewellery store, Hamilton and Inches on George Street in Edinburgh. This is annotated on the face at the top.
The clock was made in the 1950s, but it looked back to Deco designs of the 1930s for inspiration. The clock is angular with sharp geometric shapes and pale muted colours.
It has a central clock face area. The face has black Roman numerals and a silvered dial. The face is covered with a convex glass - and held in place by a square chrome trim. The face of the clock is nice and clean - and easy to read the time. There is no scratching to the glass.
From the central clock face issue decorative wings at each side - these are very geometric in form. The main body of the clock and the wings are made of a fine highly polished onyx. There are very attractive veins in the stone. The wings are made of two colours of onyx - a pale green at the top and also creating the feet area. The onyx is in lovely condition.
The back is beautifully finished (especially as this is not seen on a daily basis) with the workings of the clock contained in a chrome casement (around the edges) with a hard black plastic in the central area. There is a large built-in key for you to hand wind the clock towards the bottom on the reverse. There is sadly one tiny chip on the edge of the wing on the left-hand side. This is very minor and hardly noticeable - and certainly not visible when viewed from the front. This is taken into account with my pricing.
The base has a thin piece of green fabric on the bottom of the wing sections - so that the stone does not scratch your furniture. The fabric is original to the clock.
As mentioned, the clock is working and has a nice comforting ticking sound when wound up. We have checked it over some time for accuracy - and it is running well and keeping time. It appears to be an eight-day movement - so you just wind it up once a week.
This is a very good quality vintage clock - made by a prestigious clockmaker and sold in one of Edinburgh's finest retail emporiums. It is nice and clean - and looks great on display.
Dimensions: The overall width is 10 1/2 inches. The height is 5 1/4 inches. The depth is about 2 1/4 inches. The face is 3 1/2 inches square.
