This is a little piece of Scottish sporting history - and is now very much of a rare survivor.
It is a special souvenir made to celebrate Scotland qualifying for the World Cup in Argentina in 1978. It was a big event for football supporters in Scotland - and I remember from the time the record by Andy Cameron - Ali's Tartan Army of this date. It was a dreadful record.. but seems to have been a rather memorable one! Amazingly - after being featured on Top of the Pops - it reached No. 6 in the charts.
Most of the commemorative items that have survived tend to be coin sets, stickers, and sticker albums - which fetch quite high prices now. Even the ubiquitous pint glass tankard with facsimile signatures of the team printed on it - and which used to be present in every Scottish house - is rarely seen these days.
This is another souvenir produced at this time - and they were retailed at the time in Scottish furniture shops. I think over the years - they have either been thrown out - or are all wrapped in the loft spaces.
Despite the popular support for the Scottish team in this competition - they failed to advance beyond the first round.
This is an original fireside or hearth rug - it measures 135 x 71cm. As you can see in my photographs - it is in very good vintage condition given that it is now nearly 45 years old. It is back with a natural fiber open weave hessian backing and the image on the front is on wool. The design features a Saltire, a Red Lion Rampant, and the Scottish team logo - a football in the form of an abstract thistle.
As you can see it remains in a very fine condition - it is nice and clean with no moth damage or losses / staining to the design. It has no nasty smells etc. The reverse is also relatively nice and clean - it might have been laid down on the floor for the World Cup Games - but as we know there weren't very many of them for Scotland in Argentina.
This is now an item for a specialist collector of Scottish football memorabilia - or as a matter of historical interest for a sporting museum or club.
It would be sent to you with Parcelforce Recorded Delivery in the UK and this would cost £10 and this would be applied to your order at the checkout.
