This is a stunning large silver-plated candle holder or candelabra. It was designed by the Danish silversmith E. Dragsted in the 1950s.
It is rare to find this larger size and in such fine condition.
It forms a showstopper of a centrepiece – and consists of a ring of undulating rods capped with a total of eight cup-shaped candle holders (for slightly thicker candles, diameter about 2 cm). They have drip pans below each sconce so that the candle wax does not drip onto your furniture. The scones and the drip pans can be screwed off the main central structure of the candelabra – so that it is easier to clean them all when required. This is a mark of quality.
Dimensions: the diameter is about 151/4 inches (39 cm). It is 5 ½ inches in height (14 cm). The diameter at the top of each candle sconce is 2 cm.
It is a fine piece of Scandinavian metalwork. The candleholder is made of heavy brass which has been silver-plated. It is nice and shiny with no losses to the plate. It is also stamped on the base E Dragsted Denmark / 57, as photographed.
Einar Roed Dragsted (1887 – 1967) was a silversmith and designer who lived in Copenhagen from the 1920s until his death. His father, Argent Dragsted was the royal court jeweller and a celebrated goldsmith at the end of the 19th century. In 1923, Einar branched out from his father’s company and became the sole proprietor of this own one. He had the distinguished title of the Danish Royal Silversmith. The company produced items with clean lines, a minimalistic aesthetic and attention to detail. They always have a timeless elegance.
