This is a rather strange and highly decorative woodcut by the Scottish artist, Thora Clyne. It dates to 1988 when she was travelling to Serbia and was staying in Zablak.
Clyne was fascinated by the monumental wooden door of the Husein Pasha's Mosque at Pljevlja, Montenegro. She has re-imagined the grand door as if it had been transported to the edge of a vast green plain. The work is entitled "Mosque Field".
I love the colours she has used in this colour woodcut - and it is certainly a most unusual work by her.
The print is in excellent condition and is pencil-signed by the artist and editioned in the lower margin. It is beautifully presented in a fine-quality oak frame with a gold trim. It has a fresh window mount and is all ready for you to just hang on your wall

BIOGRAPHY: Thora Clyne was born in Wick, Scotland. She studied at Edinburgh University and Edinburgh College of Art, graduating with Honours in 1960. One of her teachers was the celebrated Scottish landscape painter, William Gilles.
At the ECA she was awarded the prestigious Andrew Grant Travelling Scholarship. From 1960 - 61, she was the Principal Assistant at Aberdeen Art Gallery. In 1963 she went to the University of Colorado in the States where she studied printmaking.
Much of her work is based on places in her travels, most notably to France, Italy, and Romania.
From 1963, Clyne lectured part-time at Edinburgh College of Art. Her work was met with great acclaim and she regularly exhibited at RSA, RSW, and at the RA. London, as well as taking part in group shows in France and America. Clyne had a solo show at Torrance Gallery, Edinburgh in 1991. She was a close personal friend of Elizabeth Blackadder and she often collaborated on projects with her. Both of them loved to make studies of their cats.
