This is a fabulous nautical etching by Ian Fleming - possibly of the harbour at Arbroath.

It is a large work by him and the scene of the quayside has abstracted shapes of moored ships and marine vessels.

It is an original work by Fleming - but sadly unsigned.

Ian Fleming was born in Glasgow and studied at the Glasgow School of Art. He began printmaking at art school, and Glasgow Art Gallery bought two of his prints while he was still a student.

During his lifetime Fleming was a notable artist and engraver and played an important role in the Scottish art world. He was a lecturer at Glasgow School of Art for many years and then successively Warden of Patrick Allen-Fraser Art College at Hospitalfield and Principal of Gray's School of Art, Aberdeen.

For many years Fleming served as Chairman for the Peacock printmaker’s workshop. He has been commemorated with a plaque outside his residence at 15 Fonthill Road.

In 1996, Aberdeen Art Gallery showed a large collection of his works in a memorial exhibition. In 2006 there was an Ian Fleming exhibition at Dean Gallery in Edinburgh and a review of this by Scotland On Sunday declared that he "was not only one of the most accomplished artists of his generation but, until his death aged 88 in 1994, he was one of the most powerful and outspoken voices in Scottish art.”

This fine print is being sold unframed - it is in excellent condition and will look fabulous when framed for display with a cream coloured window mount and simple chunky black frame.
