I always have a bit of a soft spot for old Staffordshire Figurines, and none more so than these pretty examples with feature milkmaids seated beside a cow.
This one is certainly charming with the little milkmaid seated to the right of an oversized cow.
This is a lovely example and given its age (it dates to the late 19th century) it is in remarkable condition. There are no nasty chips or damages. The horns are whole and have never been restored or broken. The cow's legs are very thin and delicate - and they are surprisingly free from any damage! There is a tiny firing crack (done in the making) behind one ear, as photographed.
A pretty lady or milkmaid wearing a little yellow hat sits beside a black and white Crummie (or cow) that is decorated with its original loosely painted patches of grey / black. The milkmaid is seated on the right-hand side of the cow and holds a little milk pail with a blue rim on her lap. She wears a short white cotton dress and her pink knees are showing. I love how the modeller has painted the cow's udder in the same pink as the lady's knees - and the teats are just three little black dots.
The group is set on an oval base painted with green grass or brown earth. A little grey fence is behind the cow to the left. There is a tiny bit of rough bocage below the milkmaid and the foreleg of the cow. The back of the figurine is plain, as you might expect, and there is an air hole in the center. A fine antique decorative piece.
Dimensions: about 8 inches wide and with a height of 6 1/2 inches. The depth is three inches.
Very cottage chic - and would look fabulous on display in a country cottage or rustic bed and breakfast in the dining room. I have listed it at a fair price - as it is more unusual to find a black and white cow - and it is of a nice larger size for display.
Of course - being sold as a genuine antique 19th-century example - it is certainly NOT a modern reproduction piece.
