This is a large decorative antique Scottish Bridgemess / Bo'ness Pottery Russet Recumbent Lion. It is being sold as a single lion - but they are often available as pairs.

The lion is very heavy and makes a good doorstop or fireside ornament - or just as a large decorative piece.

Mr Biggie Lion was made at Bo'ness Pottery and dates to around 1900. He looks like he may have been made at a Staffordshire Pottery - but he was made in Central Scotland. I have also listed him under Staffordshire for interested people - but he is a MacLion!

A selection of similar Scottish-made animals can be viewed on this site - if you are interested in their history etc. (including my pair of lions with the yellow teeth).

This chunky beastie is in good antique condition. There is some grey staining to the base - where the clay has naturally discoloured over the decades. He has brown glass eyes. The lion is seated and looks out toward you.. watch yer fingers.. lol! He sits on a green base painted with glazes to look like a grassy bank.

As previously mentioned - he is large and chunky - measuring 13 inches in length, 10 inches in height, and 5 1/2 inches wide. He weighs a stonking 3.3 kg

HISTORY: In the 18th century, Bo’ness was one of the most thriving towns on the east coast and ranked as the third port in Scotland. Among the town's many thriving industries was pottery production and Bo'ness soon became established as one of the main pottery-producing areas in the country.

Pottery production in the town lasted for almost 200 years. It reached its heyday at the end of the 19th century when three factories were operating simultaneously at Bo'ness, Grangepans, and Bridgeness. The last pottery closed as recently as 1958.

Sadly the size and weight would restrict these to UK posting only. They will be sent to you in the UK with Parcelforce24- this will cost about £14 and applied to your order at the checkout.
